„I worked as a creative coding freelancer on a project in Amsterdam. Even though I was hired for my technical input, I quickly noticed that I was treated differently as the only woman on the team. In meetings, my ideas were often overlooked until repeated by a male colleague, and I was repeatedly asked to handle note-taking, coordination, and other support tasks instead of the core work. Important decisions were made without me, and I was sometimes introduced to clients as someone who could help with organisation rather than as a technical contributor. The extra work I took on was never recognised, while my male colleagues were trusted more easily with main responsibilities. It was not the first time I experienced this kind of treatment, so over time I stopped being surprised by it. That made it easier to keep going on the surface, but it also meant I had already lowered my expectations before the project even ended.“
